A kids' base layer is the layer worn directly against the skin. Its main job is moving sweat away from the body, because damp skin loses heat roughly 25 times faster than dry skin. Warmth comes from the layers on top; dryness comes from the base. Get the base right and everything above it works better.

A useful parent rule: match the Warmth Factor to the activity level, not just the temperature. A kid skiing hard generates heat; a kid standing in a lift line or riding a chairlift does not. For resort days, midweight (7–8) is the safest default — warm enough for the lift, breathable enough for the run.

Two practical notes. First, GSM (grams per square meter) measures fabric density, not warmth by itself — construction matters as much as weight, which is why the single Warmth Factor number is a better guide than comparing GSM across brands. Second, toddler styles like the Bi-Ply Set come as matched top-and-bottom sets in soft two-layer knits, because nobody wants to hunt for a separate toddler bottom at 6am on a ski morning.
The most common mistake parents make is buying base layers a size or two up so they last another season. With outerwear that works; with base layers it doesn't. The right size is the one that matches your kid's current height and weight — measure chest, height, and inseam and check them against the size chart on every product page. If your child is between sizes, size up one at most. The three-layer system works the same for kids as for adults — it's just less forgiving, because kids won't manage their own layers.
Add one pair of thermal ski socks (never two — doubled socks wrinkle, cut circulation, and make feet colder), and a neck gaiter or balaclava for lift rides. Underwear under the thermals is personal preference; a proper base layer is designed to work either way.
Most kids' thermal wear doesn't happen on a mountain.
