It is that base layers are sold on vague words like "thermal" and "midweight" when the decisions that actually matter are warmth, weight, fit, and size. A base layer is the first piece of clothing worn against your skin in cold weather. Its job is not primarily insulation. Its job is moisture management: moving sweat off your skin so it can evaporate somewhere else instead of sitting against you and pulling heat out of your body. Wet skin loses heat dramatically faster than dry skin, which is why a soaked cotton t-shirt under a ski jacket makes you colder than no shirt at all.
Hot Chillys uses a proprietary fiber technology called MTF, short for Moisture Transfer Fiber, across the line. Synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon are hydrophobic, meaning they repel water at the fiber level rather than soaking it up, so sweat gets pushed to the outer face of the fabric where it can evaporate. Hot Chillys rates every base layer fabric on a Warmth Factor scale from 6 to 10. This is more useful than a temperature rating because it does not pretend to know your metabolism, your activity level, or what you are wearing over the top. Higher numbers mean more insulation.
The key rule is to match warmth to output, not just to the forecast. High-output activity like skiing, snowboarding, or snowshoeing generates a lot of body heat and a lot of sweat, so you need aggressive moisture movement more than maximum insulation. Low-output use like commuting, working outdoors, or standing at the base of a run means your body is producing less heat, so you need more warmth for the same temperature.

GSM stands for grams per square meter and it measures how much a fabric weighs for a given area. Heavier usually does mean warmer, and it is a reasonable first filter. The problem is that it is not the whole story, because construction changes real-world warmth independently of weight.
The clearest example in the Hot Chillys line is Pepper Bi-Ply. It is built from two layers of spun polyester joined back to back with an air gap between them. That trapped air insulates, so Pepper Bi-Ply earns a Warmth Factor 7 at only 160 gsm while Pepper Skins, which is heavier at 175 gsm, only rates a 6. Weight lost the argument to construction. Trapped air is what insulates, not fabric mass.

Two things jump out. La Montaña hits the top of the warmth scale at only 200 gsm because fleece traps air efficiently, which is how you get serious insulation without bulk. And Micro-Elite XT is the only nylon-based fabric in the group, which is what gives it a wind-resistant outer face on top of its Warmth Factor 10 rating. Every fabric in the table carries MTF moisture transfer fibers and a UPF rating, either 30+ or 40+ on the two warmest options, which matters more than people expect at altitude. Fit is where most men go wrong, usually by buying something too loose. A base layer that does not touch your skin cannot move sweat off it. Hot Chillys uses three fit designations, and they are genuinely different garments rather than marketing labels.

The practical read: if the piece is going under a shell on a ski day, go body or active fit. If it is going under jeans and a flannel for a cold morning, relaxed fit is more comfortable and you will not notice the performance difference. Note from the fabric table above that most of the Warmth Factor 6 and 7 fabrics are cut relaxed, while the warmest technical fabrics are cut close. That is deliberate. If you land between sizes, size down for body and active fit pieces you intend to layer, and size up for relaxed fit pieces you plan to wear on their own. This is the most common question men actually have and the one most buying guides skip. The short answer is that yes, you can wear underwear under a base layer, and most men do.
The longer answer depends on the bottoms. A relaxed fit thermal bottom is designed to go over your normal underwear, and that is how most men wear it. A close-cut tight in a body or active fit is designed to sit directly against your skin, and adding a cotton brief underneath defeats the point, because cotton absorbs and holds sweat exactly where you least want it. If you are wearing a tight for a ski day and you want something underneath, choose a synthetic or wool boxer brief rather than cotton, or wear nothing underneath at all.
The same logic applies on top. Nothing goes between your skin and the base layer if you want the fabric to do its job, and specifically not a cotton undershirt. The base layer is the undershirt.
Hot Chillys is a synthetic-first brand, and that is a deliberate engineering decision rather than a cost decision. Synthetic fibers repel water at the fiber level, so sweat gets moved off your skin immediately rather than absorbed into the fiber and released slowly the way wool does. In practice that means faster drying, more consistent performance during high-output activity, and better durability over many seasons and many washes.
Merino's real advantage is natural odor resistance for multi-day wear without access to a washing machine, which is genuinely useful for backcountry travel and much less relevant for resort skiing or a winter commute. Hot Chillys addresses odor on the synthetic side instead, with Bio-Silver antimicrobial panels on some fabrics and an OBP odor blocking treatment that is quantified and guaranteed effective for 20 to 30 wash cycles. Natural fiber odor resistance has no comparable measurable standard.

The general shape of this: as your output goes up, your Warmth Factor should come down. Most men who complain about being too hot on the hill bought a Warmth Factor 10 for an activity that called for a 7. Most men start with a top, and that is usually right, because your core is where heat loss matters most and a top layers under everything you already own. Bottoms make a bigger difference than people expect on ski days, though, because ski pants are shells with almost no insulation of their own.
On top, the choice is between a crewneck and a zip-T. A crewneck is simpler and layers flatter. A zip-T lets you dump heat without stopping to take anything off, which is genuinely useful on a warm spring day or during a long climb. If you sweat a lot, the zip is worth the extra cost. On the bottom, relaxed fit bottoms go over underwear and under regular pants, while tights sit against the skin and disappear under a shell.
Base layers fail early for one reason more than any other, and it is fabric softener. The washing instructions are short.
The reason softener matters so much: it coats the fibers, which reduces the fabric's moisture-wicking ability and actually makes it harder to wash sweat and body odor out of the garment. Any detergent residue designed to stay on the fabric, including brighteners and added scents, causes the same problem. A base layer that has been softened for a season stops performing and starts smelling, and people usually blame the garment. You can, and most men do with relaxed fit thermal bottoms, which are designed to go over normal underwear. With a close-fitting tight, skip cotton underwear or skip underwear entirely, because cotton traps sweat against your skin and cancels out what the base layer is built to do.
Snug, not tight. It needs contact with your skin to move moisture, but it is not compression wear and should not restrict movement. Body fit and active fit are cut close for exactly this reason. Relaxed fit trades a little performance for comfort and is the better choice for everyday wear.
