Skiing has a layering problem no other sport has: you generate serious heat for three minutes, then sit nearly still on a chairlift in the wind for ten. Gear that's warm enough for the lift is too hot for the run; gear light enough for the run leaves you shivering on the lift. The jacket can't solve this. The base layer can.
A ski base layer is thermal underwear worn directly against the skin under ski clothes. Its job is moving sweat off your body between runs, because sweat left on skin is what makes the chairlift cold. The skiers who are comfortable all day aren't wearing the thickest layers — they're wearing the ones that dry fastest.

If you're buying one set for a season of resort skiing, midweight (Warmth Factor 7–8) is the answer — warm enough for January lift rides, breathable enough for a bump run. The neck is where ski tops differ, and it matters more than most buyers think — the neck is a major heat-loss zone and the hardest one to adjust mid-run.

The zip-T is the skier's default for a reason: the zipper is a thermostat. Browse t-necks and zip styles across every fabric weight.
The most common cold-skier mistake is bare legs — or worse, jeans — under ski pants. Ski pants are shells; they block wind and water but insulate lightly, and your quads are the biggest muscles you'll be working all day. Thermal bottoms under ski pants are not optional in winter.
Match the weight of your bottoms to your top or go one step lighter (legs run warmer than torsos). Fit notes that matter for skiing: a gusseted construction moves with a tuck, flat seams don't press under boot cuffs, and bottoms should end above the boot — never stuff a thermal cuff into a ski boot, it wrinkles and cuts circulation exactly where you need blood flow.
Underwear under long johns is personal preference — base layers are designed to work either way. Socks are not a matter of preference: one pair of proper ski socks, never two. Doubled socks wrinkle and compress, and compression is what makes feet cold. Choose a thermal ski sock, and if your feet are cold with good socks, the culprit is usually boot fit, not the sock.
A ski base layer should sit close to the skin everywhere — that contact is what makes moisture transfer work. Adjust warmth at the mid layer, dryness at the base layer. When people feel cold skiing, they usually add a thicker jacket — when the actual fix is a base layer that keeps their skin dry.
Snowboarders sit in the snow more and idle longer setting up. That means: slightly warmer bottoms than a comparable skier (your seat is in contact with snow), and a longer top or one-piece coverage that doesn't ride up and expose your lower back when you're strapped in and leaning forward. Thermal base layer bottoms — midweight for most resort days — and nothing else. Jeans, cotton leggings, or sweatpants under ski pants trap moisture and make your legs colder.
