Tips for Choosing the Right Winter Clothing Layers

As simple enough as the concept of layering is, there are so many people who have no idea of how to do it properly. You must think in layers, just as the name suggests.

Once you have done it correctly, you should be able to withstand any kind of winter weather. Here are a few tips for choosing the right winter clothing layers so that you can know how to layer properly during harsh conditions.

The Bottom Layer

Because this layer is closest to the body and the first article of clothing you will put on, you should consider a few things. When putting on your base layer, it needs to be snug.

At the same time, it should wick moisture, essentially keeping you dry so that your core temperature can regulate at its best. It doesn’t need to be thick. In fact, the thinner, the better for this layer. Polyester or synthetic is the perfect base layer in this case.

The Middle Layer

This is what could be known as “the insulator,” as the main purpose of the middle layer is exactly that. You want something that will insulate well but allow you some wiggle room for a full range of motion, so a loose-fitting sweatshirt would be perfect for this layer.

For the material, the best natural insulator is wool or a wool blend, so try to use that. If you don’t happen to have anything like that, then a regular sweatshirt or a vest should work just fine.

The Outer Layer

Finally, this is the protective layer, which keeps you dry and warm from the elements. You will want something all weather and not too bulky.

A running jacket made of a synthetic blend would be perfect. It doesn’t need to be thick as long as it’s effective. Polyester is the go-to for this layer for winter thermals.
